Chapter 15

“San Bernardino?” Kinsley gasped in shock when she saw the welcome sign.

“You wanted a bigger city,” Carter said, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye.

Kinsley was speechless. Carter knew her love for big cities and drove them an hour and a half to the closest big city to take her out. It was the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for her. Another chip of armor around her heart fell away. She had no defenses to guard against this man. He understood her. She had done all she could to keep him away and yet he kept coming back.

He was making it harder for her to remember why she needed to keep some distance between them. It would be easier for the both of them when she left soon.

“Why?” was all she could think to ask. Why would he do this for her?

Seeing a large town made her feel giddy. It wasn’t DC by any means, but seeing the large stretch of skylines and thousands of buildings made her happy. Soon she would hear the constant traffic and see the thousands of people walking around. She wouldn’t be in a town you could hardly find on a map or blink and it was gone as you drove past it.

“I wanted to see you smile. I’ve never seen it.” He shrugged.

Wanted to see her smile? Who was this guy? Was he for real?

Come to think of it, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d smiled. Maybe after a case was solved, but who had time to think about that sort of thing?

“I don’t think I’ve ever smiled, but thank you for this.”

“I’ll get you to smile,” he said with a confidence that impressed her. Like he was going to make it a mission to make her smile. That thought alone almost made her smile. Oh no. Not going to happen.

Don’t ever end up like me. Don’t ever settle. You get out of this town and never come back. Small towns will kill you. They’ll suck everything out of you until there is nothing left.

Kinsley’s mom’s words bounced around her head. Small-town living had killed her mother’s happiness. Her poor excuse for a father hadn’t helped. He was a leech. Sucking everything good out of her until there was nothing left. Why he hadn’t left her mother to find another victim was beyond her. It was like he only lived to torment her mother anymore. Kinsley had vowed she would never let that happen to her. No man would ever control her, and she would never, ever end up in a small town.

“Where did you go?” Carter asked, peeking over at her with a frown.

“Nowhere.” She snapped out of her thoughts. Thinking of the past would do her no good. Only think of her future. Getting back in the bureau. That’s all that mattered.

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?” she snapped.

“Close yourself off and push people away. I get it’s what you’re used to, but it has to stop. Your anger is what’s holding you back.
